Online dating can be terrifying. you just never know what you’re getting yourself into. Some of us are brave enough to give it a try, while others are too scared due to all the horror stories they’ve heard.

We tend to have this strange perception of the whole online dating aspect, but let me tell you, there’s nothing wrong with giving online dating a try especially if you lead a busy lifestyle.

I have put together some tips for creating your first online dating profile. Give it a try, you have nothing to loose.

Your Photos

Your smiling face is the first thing people will judge you on. Keep your photos fresh and recent. Swap around the order of your photos frequently, especially your primary photo. This will make you look like a new user and people that may have missed you before are more likely to give you a second look. Don’t be tempted to filter any of your images too much, remember you don’t want to come across as a ‘catfish’. Make sure you have a minimum of 3 photos on your profile, this is enough for people to know you are a genuine person, providing you clearly look the same in them all.

Your Profile

It’s common for us to find it difficult to write about ourselves as it might feel a little awkward. Maybe ask a friend or a family member to cast a fresh eye over what you’ve written. The first 30 words of your profile is what really counts.Try to avoid clichés in your profile because, let’s face it, everyone wants someone who’s loyal and we all like walking on the beach at sunset. It’s a good idea to elaborate on your activities as people tend to be attractive to those who they can relate to.

Don’t be Google-able

Just like meeting a stranger in real life, you have to be safe when you’re online. Before giving away any information such as job titles or personal details, think about how those could be used to track you online. Be careful what you say about yourself, someone could use your details to find you on Social Media. You don’t want to attract an stalker of any type. Avoid them from carrying out an image search use a photo that doesn’t appear anywhere on the internet. Value your privacy.

Your First Message

Don’t be afraid to send a message, what’s the worse that can happen? So what if you don’t get a reply, it’s not like you knew the person. Remember, you have nothing to loose if someone doesn’t reply back to your first message. Don’t just send 1 and expect a reply, explore your options. Send messages to a number of people who attract you either by their photos or their profile. Keep your first message short and sweet. ‘Hi, how are you doing?’ or ‘Hi, How is your day/weekend going?’ Don’t say too much, just enough for them to reply back to your message.

Keep your options open

It might feel a little strange, but, don’t feel that you have to speak to one person at a time. This is online dating, so most people will be talking to a few people at the same time. Don’t take that personally, just be honest about it. It’s worth meeting up to find out if you have a connection, you only need to exchange numbers before you suggest meeting – you won’t know if there’s anything between you until you’re face-to-face. After all this is about dating, not messaging.

Don’t get disheartened

Along the way, you’ll are definitely going to meet some duds. You can have matching profiles, get on like a house on fire online, but then have zero chemistry in real life. Online dating is an enjoyable and fun experience. Don’t take it too seriously and prepare yourself to meet plenty of nice, friendly people who you don’t fancy. At some stage, there will be someone that you do. Many people go on around 30 dates before they meet someone they really fall for online. So try to keep that in perspective and enjoy the process.
